Slovenia, day 3
It's the day we've been looking forward to since we started planning. We're going to explore some of Slovenia's famous caves and after looking forward to it for so long we can't believe the day's finally here! Since Slovenia is pretty small you can get almost anywhere from Ljubljana in a few hours on a coach and today we're heading for Postonja. After a couple of hours watching the beautiful scenery go by we get to the town and with a couple of successful guesses at which way to go we end up at the cave entrance. Our tour doesn't start for an hour so we pass the time tucking into some of the local ... cake. It was quite strange because it had so many different layers and we struggled to work out what most of them were but it's hard not to enjoy cake!
Our tour of the caves is fantastic. It starts with an open top train ride through the first couple of kilometres and we're constantly amazed at every twist and turn by huge caverns full of stalactites and stalagmites, even some that meet and join together. It's got to be the best train ride either of us has been on. When we get off the train everyone is split into small groups based on their language and we meet our guide who leads us through more of the caves on foot and tells us more about their history. She's really enthusiastic and obviously loves her job which makes the tour even better. We couldn't recommend a visit here highly enough, it really was spectacular. About halfway through the tour we got to see the Proteus; a weird looking, blind amphibian that only lives in Postonja caves (unfortunately they were in a tank but we'd never have found any otherwise. Also we couldn't take photos of them so look them up!). They're also know as baby dragons and we could see why (they're also called human fish but that's not because of their looks, they can live about 100 years). On the way out of the caves we get the train ride again so this time we record it (James is already working out how to fit it into future lessons).
After a day of adventure James makes full use of the kitchen and makes a beef and beer stew. We even manage to find a specialist beer shop in Ljubljana to get the perfect ale and the owner is intrigued by our plans for it, apparently she's never thought of cooking with beer. Slovenians are obviously missing out on steak and ale pie! Her suggestion works out very well the meal is a fine way to end a great day.
